Corruption in China unabetted as Xi’s efforts turn futile

The recent cases of probes in the healthcare sector and military procurement indicate that corruption continues to occur in China relentlessly, hinting at the failure of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s so-called crusade against corruption. Xi himself admitted it earlier this year when he said the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)- government still faced the uphill tasks of preventing new cases and rooting out existing ones.      Xi had rolled out an aggressive anti-corruption campaign soon after he came to power in 2013. While it led to action against some officials and leaders, it appeared more focused on targeting dissidents and those who were perceived as potential threats to Xi, said SOAS China Institute director Steve Tsang. “Xi’s anticorruption campaign was a

Biden tries to counter China’s influence in Asia

We look at President Biden's trip to India for the G-20 meeting, and then to Vietnam, where he has an opportunity to strengthen security and trade ties, trying to counter China's influence there. President Joe Biden has had a busy couple of days in a part of the world where he is trying to strengthen partnerships. He was in India for the G20, and today he's in Vietnam, where he met with the country's leader, the head of Vietnam's Communist Party. Biden is highlighting the countries growing closer given their, quote, "bitter past." PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: This trip has been a historic moment. Today, we can trace 50-year arc of progress in the relationship between our nations, from conflict to normalization. RASCOE: NPR White House correspondent Asma Khalid has been traveling with the...

In light of the G20, India, the US, Saudi Arabia, and the EU sign a port agreement.

The sweeping deal aims to link South Asia and the Middle East to help the flow of energy and trade from the Gulf to Europe India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and the European Union announced a sweeping rail and ports deal on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, or IMEC, will link South Asia and the Middle East to help the flow of energy and trade from the Gulf to Europe, US officials have said. The deal is largely seen as a push by US President Joe Biden to counter China’s Belt and Road initiative by pitching Washington as an alternative partner and investor for developing countries at the G20 grouping, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. At an event announcing the pact, Biden

Singaporean Newspaper’s Article Criticizing Xirocks Chinese Internet

A scathing opinion piece lambasting Xi Jinping, published by a Singaporean newspaper, did not escape the attention of netizens on Weibo, who clandestinely lauded its contents. The article, titled "The Economy Is The Problem, Its Root Is Politics," was penned by Hong Kong businessman and writer Lew Mon-hung. A former member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and previously a staunch pro-China figure, he squarely laid the blame for China's present economic challenges on Xi Jinping, the pervasive cult of personality around him and the Party's inability to implement political reforms including democratization. Had this piece been published in most overseas Chinese-language media outlets, its impact might have been relatively muted. However, its appearance in Singapor

Taiwan is in focus again and for good reason!

There is more to the visits to Taipei of Taro Aso, former Japanese Prime Minister and that of Lai Ching, presidential hopeful to the US than meets the eye. While the former’s visit could signal a change in Japan’s approach, the American view of Taiwan gets reinforced by Ching’s visit. Though low-key visits, the statements made by the former Japanese PM certainly led Beijing to angrily react. Taro Aso's remark that Japan must show "the resolve to fight" to defend Taiwan from attack was in line with Tokyo's official stance, angered China, with the foreign ministry spokesperson saying that Beijing  urges Japan to abide by the One China principle and refrain from supporting pro- independence Taiwan forces in any way. In a way, both Aso and Lai Ching- te’s visits were primarily for their

Arrogant China forbids tourists to visit Taiwan !

China is leaving no stone unturned to hurt Taiwan. While on one hand it continues with its military activity around the island and on the other hand, it has adopted several financial coercive measures against Taiwan. China has deliberately ignored Taiwan while allowing tourists to visit various countries. The Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism recently announced a third round of outbound group tour services that would be resumed to 78 countries and regions, including the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia, India and most European countries, expanding the scope from 60 to 138 countries and areas. Taiwan remained off the list. This is sixth year since China imposed a ban on travellers to Taiwan. Though Taiwan’s economy is not tourism driven yet the contribution of tourism in the e

China wants Guatemala to cut ties with Taiwan?

China has set its eyes on Guatemala which continues to recognise Taiwan. It is leaving no stone unturned to influence the most populous country in Central America as latter does not maintain diplomatic ties with Beijing. The recent explusion of Taiwan by the Central American Parliament more than two decades as a permanent observer, for China, has given a lot of hope to President Xi Jinping that he would be able to influence Guatemala now. The six-nation parliament, known as Parlacen, cited the United Nations' 1971 expulsion of Taiwan in favour of China, saying this deemed Taiwan to be a "province of mainland China, which disqualifies it from participating as an independent country". Convened in the Nicaraguan capital Managuarecently , local legislators proposed adding China instead ...

Chinese Communist Party Stifling Dissenting Voices

The recent study conducted by the renowned Rand Europe research institute sheds light on a deeply troubling development: the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) escalating efforts to stifle dissenting voices through heightened operational activities in high-security Tibetan facilities. This disconcerting trend, as uncovered by the meticulous analysis of nighttime luminosity and satellite imagery, underscores the CCP's tightening grip on its control over the Tibetan population and its deliberate campaign to quash any form of opposition. The Rand study, which meticulously scrutinized 79 correctional and detention facilities, paints a grim picture of the situation in Tibet. The researchers astutely identified conspicuous spikes in nighttime illumination in 14 facilities characterized by their...

Local Government Debt Remains Major Risk For The Chinese Economy

In an unprecedented move, China’s State Council sent teams of officials to more than 10 of the financially weakest provinces to inspect their books and find ways to cut the over USD 13 trillion provincial debt that threatens the financial stability of the economy. Debt-laden local governments now represent a major risk to China's economy. Fears have grown over a public default on repayments of debt sold by local government financing vehicles (LGFVs). There are increasing worries over a potential debt defaults by LGFVs destabilising the financial sector. Guangfa Securities estimated that there were a total of 73 defaults in LGFVs sold in private transactions in the first quarter this year. The fears over defaults by LGFVs increased after Zhongzhi Enterprise Group Co., that operates i

Africa’s Stakes in External Dependence for Security

China has loaned USD 3.56 billion to African countries for military, domestic security and dual purposes. The 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, held in Dakar Senegal in November 2021 had indicated that China, under China-Africa Cooperative Partnership, was planning to launch 50 security assistance programmes under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) across law and order, UN Peacekeeping and counter piracy operations. Nevertheless, China’s increased interest in the security of African countries, many believe, could not be seen as a good samaritan’s act alone. China’s BRI, as it is obvious by now to observers all around the world, is not only a “connectivity” programme for development of trade and investment, but it has surely underlying strategic intent
