Cracks in Russia-China Relations

In a recent incident, Russian Border Guards denied (July 29, 2023) entry to five Chinese citizens who tried to cross the Russia-Kazakhstan border by car. Their tourist visas were cancelled and they were interrogated for nearly four hours. The Chinese Embassy in Moscow took immediate note of the incident and in a sharply worded statement said that the “incident seriously violated the legitimate rights of Chinese citizens, and was totally out of line of the currently amicable relationship between China and Russia, and the growing trend of closer exchange of personnel between our two countries”. It also demanded Russia to immediately investigate the incident. The Russian side tried to downplay the incident and described it an isolated case. But the refusal of Russian Border Guards to let the

Germany’s Defiant Stance: Navigating China’s Dominance And Ambitions With Strategic Shift

Germany's recent shift in its approach towards China reflects a notable change from its previously accommodating and sympathetic stance to a more cautious and confrontational one. While some may argue that Germany is following the United States' lead, the comprehensive nature of Berlin's approach indicates that they are taking the lead in this matter, akin to Japan's stance during the G7 meetings in Hiroshima. According to translations of the 64-page strategy document released by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government, Germany's motivation to change its approach stems from China's own actions. The document accuses Beijing of attempting to dismantle the long-standing "rules-based international order" that has governed global trade and finance for decades. Furthermore, it highligh...

China is ‘greatest strategic challenge,’: Japan’s White Paper

A day after Taiwan carried out its first anti-takeover drill at the self-ruling island’s major international gateway in Taoyuan to test its ability to defend itself from a Chinese invasion, Japan issued a White Paper on July 28 in which it expressed its worries about China’s growing military activities around Taiwan, which is claimed by Beijing as its own territory. China has vowed to unify it with mainland China by force, if necessary. According to The Japan Times, the White Paper devotes an entirely new section to China’s move around Taiwan as well as a “full-page commentary on the Chinese military trends surrounding the island.” Upset over Japan’s White Paper’s details on the Chinese military activities around Taiwan, China made serious demarches to Japan on July 28 and issued a lon

Without political leaders’ involvement, will China science policy succeed?

Following global isolation, China has made a fundamental shift in favour of scientists for achieving double digit economic growth to building resilience against external shocks. The deterioration of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) with the US and its allies,  battle with the Covid-19 pandemic, and the government’s unwillingness to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have contributed to the country’s increased separation from the global West. These events have far-reaching consequences for Chinese ambitions in global science.. However, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has turned towards scientists to end dependence on “learning from the West”, and ofcourse political colleagues as well. That’s because, he thinks that scientists alone can fulfil his ambiti

Xi government attempts loyalty test on media, influences opinion in the US

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is hell bent to force journalists to become his loyalist or give up their profession. He is willing to go beyond boundaries. Known for consolidating his position as the supreme leader, Xi Jinping is now pushing CCP doctrine on media within the country and outside. A Chinese marketing firm that has counted state police and other government bureaus as clients is leveraging newswire services to place pro- Beijing stories on the websites of almost three dozen news outlets across America in an apparent effort to help Beijing improve its image abroad. Still in grip of corruption, will PLA fulfil Xi’s wish to capture Taiwan by 2027?

Like every developing country, China is not immune to corruption and the country’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is said to be equally drenched in its baleful effect despite a hard try by the Central Military Commission—the high command of the Chinese military. This concern was expressed by President Xi Jinping at the just concluded (July 20-21) meeting of the CMC. He also underscored the need for “combat readiness” of the PLA at the meeting in Beijing, said state-backed Xinhua news. At the time when Beijing is gearing up to unify Taiwan with mainland China and has threatened to use military means to control and occupy the self-ruling island, the PLA is grappling with kickbacks, commissions, and bribes. Aljazeera said corruption in the Chinese military stems largely from a tradition o

Why Chinese organizations are using AI censoring from People’s Daily to dodge political minefield

Increasingly, businesses, organizations, and even individuals use content moderation services to pre-screen internet content. The use of artificial intelligence to detect threats is expected to increase, according to experts, but may the technology overlook "implicit" meanings? When putting anything online for public consumption, Chinese businesses, government agencies, and celebrities risk getting into trouble in a variety of ways.As many incidents in recent years have shown, there may be repercussions for publishing a map that inaccurately depicts Beijing's South China Sea claims, including an unintentionally embarrassed official in a photograph, or even hinting to a secret political taboo. Beijing's internet censorship authority has the power to punish offenders with severe fi...

Germany’s new China strategy departs from the past as de-risking is given more attention.

Although the Blueprint supports EU policy and emphasizes political and economic concerns, it is obvious that decoupling is still not an option.Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock says Berlin has to adjust its approach because "China has changed" in a report that breaks with the Angela Merkel era. On Thursday, Germany unveiled a comprehensive plan to revamp its relationship with China, marking a significant change in how it sees its largest economic partner. The country's new China policy had been put off for many months as a result of the three-party coalition's internal squabbles. However, its release made it apparent that although Berlin desires to continue having a deep and extensive engagement with Beijing on matters of shared interest, a new strategy is needed when dealing with a...
