J&K DDC polls: 49% turnout in 2nd phase

State Election Commissioner of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, K.K. Sharma informed that 48.62% voter turnout was recorded in the second phase of District Development Council (DDC) polls.“The day passed off peacefully,” Sharma told reporters during a press conference. “There has been no untoward or any law and order issue anywhere in Kashmir or in Jammu.”The SEC said that a large number of people have come out to cast their votes during the second phase of the 2020 DDC polls. The first phase of the maiden District Development Council (DDC) polls, and the Panchayat by-elections, began on November 28 (Saturday) in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).The polling has begun for the DDC polls and bypolls to panchyats and urban local bodies across Jammu and Kashmir for the first phase of the eight-phase process, the officials said.296 candidates are contesting the first phase of the DDC polls — 172 from Kashmir division and 124 from Jammu. A total of 1,475 candidates are in the fray for the first phase that includes seats for Panchs and Sarpanchs also, officials said.In all, 280 DDC members will be elected in the elections which will end on December 19. In the first major exercise of electoral rights after the abrogation of Article 370, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) poll panel has announced to hold District Development Council (DDC) polls in the Indian union territory to be held in eight phases from November 28 to December 22.The polls for the vacant seats of sarpanchs and panchs and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would also be held simultaneously with the DDC Polls.The government had in October amended the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act to provide for setting up of District Development Councils in each district which will have directly elected members, marking the implementation of the entire 73rd Constitutional Amendment in the union territory.Addressing a press conference, the newly appointed State Election Commissioner, K.K Sharma ...
