N.S. Liberal leader faces barrage of criticism over ousting of young female candidate

HALIFAX - A young woman’s angry denunciation of Nova Scotia’s Liberals for dropping her candidacy over revealing photos left leader Iain Rankin exposed Friday to wider critiques of his leadership style. “This was supposed to be a boring summer campaign and now it’s really not … and the Liberal party is getting attention for the wrong reasons,” Lori Turnbull, an associate professor at the school of public administration at Dalhousie University, said Friday in an interview. The controversy appeared minor on Saturday, when Robyn Ingraham announced she would not be running in Dartmouth South, citing “the time commitment and intensity of a campaign and the impact it will have on my mental health.” But in a terse social media post days later, Ingraham stated the real reason she was forced to

(Photo by Pornprom Satrabhaya) Some anti-government demonstrators clashed with police in Bangkok’s Din Daeng area on Tuesday evening after a rally earlier in the day. The clash capped a day of protests in cars and on motorcycles by the so-called car mob on Tuesday. It was led by the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration. Earlier in the day, the protesters stopped outside buildings linked to cabinet members or supporters of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to make speeches and call for resignations. They accused the government of mismanaging the pandemic and abusing its power to silence critics. (Video by Nutthawat Wicheanbut)

Bluesman Jim Guiboche Touches People’s Lives With Great Music

(ANNews) – Jim Guiboche has been a staple of the Edmonton blues scene for over thirty years. He is on the verge of being honoured with the Edmonton Blues Hall of Fame award and, as anyone who’s worked with Jim will tell you, it’s due to his great talent and immense work ethic. The latter he credits almost entirely to his father. Well before he played guitar or worked at a job, Guiboche loved school, specifically algebra and biology. It came quite naturally to him, he says, but of course, he had to work at it. “My dad, was a really hard worker,” he begins, “almost to the point of being a workaholic, but he still spent time with the family. I think it dated back to him as a kid, growing up.” Jim’s father was a commercial fisherman in Portage MB, so he learned fishing and left school at 13

Olympics latest reminder of down year for South Koreans

KAWAGOE, Japan (AP) — The LPGA Tour is about two-thirds of the way through its season, and the last of the five majors is next week in Scotland. Missing thus far is the usual dominance of South Korea. The Olympics was the latest reminder of that. In the five times a country has had four players in the Olympics, this South Korean squad was the only one that didn’t have anyone on the podium. The best finish came from Jin Young Ko and Sei Young Kim, who tied for ninth. It stands out even more in the majors. South Korea has produced at least one major champion every year since 2011, a streak that could end if one of them does not win at Carnoustie next week. As far as LPGA Tour victories, the United States leads the way with six titles. Nelly Korda has won three of them, and that doesn’t

Beijing urges Washington to stop 'demonising' China as US official visits Wendy Sherman is the highest-level official to visit China under President Joe Biden's administration. BEIJING: Beijing urged Washington to stop "demonising" China on Monday as rancour marked the start of talks with the highest-level US envoy to visit under President Joe Biden's administration. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman's visit to the northern city of Tianjin is the first major meeting between the world's leading economies since March discussions in Anchorage between the countries' top diplomats collapsed into mudslinging. Sherman's trip aims to seek "guardrails" as ties continue to deteriorate on a range of issues from cybersecurity and tech supremacy to human rights in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. "Th...

Troops patrol Kashmir on anniversary of statehood revocation

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Government forces patrolled much of Indian-controlled Kashmir and ordered shops and businesses to remain open Thursday to foil a planned strike by separatists on the second anniversary of India’s revocation of the disputed region’s semi-autonomy. Government forces placed steel barricades and razor wire across many roads, bridges and intersections and set up additional checkpoints in anticipation of anti-India protests. Some shops and businesses remained shut in Srinagar, the region’s main city, while police and soldiers checked vehicles and frisked pedestrians. In Srinagar’s main business center, men escorted by police used iron rods and bricks to break locks on some shuttered shops. “They’re forcing us to open our businesses to show normalcy,” said shopkeeper Naz

Hong Kong leader says city set to adopt China’s anti-sanctions law

Hong Kong leader says city set to adopt China's anti-sanctions law Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said the city is set to adopt China's anti-sanctions law. HONG KONG: China's anti-sanctions law will be implemented in some form in Hong Kong, the city's leader confirmed Tuesday, a move that will add fresh regulatory pressure on international companies in the finance hub. Beijing's rubber-stamp legislature passed the law in June in response to Western penalties that were imposed following crackdowns in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. Its powers include denying visas, deportation, or seizing assets of those who formulate or comply with sanctions against Chinese businesses or officials. Foreign companies can be sued in Chinese courts for applying sanctions and the law can also be wielded against ...
