India trashes Pakistan’s claims of Delhi sponsoring terrorism

India on Sunday thrashed Pakistan’s accusations saying that India was sponsoring “terrorism" aimed at destabilising it and targeting its economic partnership with China. Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and chief military spokesman Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar had on Saturday released a dossier along with what they said were intelligence intercepts that purportedly showed the involvement of Indian intelligence operatives in acts of terrorism. India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava responded to the allegations levelled during the “press conference by the Pakistani establishment” by saying: “This is yet another futile anti-India propaganda exercise.” He added, “The so-called claims of ‘proof’ against India enjoy no credibility, are fabricated and represent figmen

Suu Kyi forecast to triumph in virus-hit Myanmar election The election will be just the second since Myanmar nation emerged from nearly half a century of junta rule in 2011. YANGON: Polls opened in Myanmar on Sunday morning for a vote expected to return to power the government of Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains a hero at home in spite of a reputation abroad shattered by the Rohingya crisis. The election will be just the second since the Southeast Asian nation emerged from nearly half a century of junta rule in 2011. Five years ago Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory, but was forced by the constitution into an uneasy power-sharing agreement with the still-mighty military. This time the civilian leader -- in a bid to maintain an absolute majority -- has i...

Pakistani PM angers India with plan to change Kashmir status

ISLAMAB - Pakistan’s prime minister has rekindled controversy with archrival India this week by pledging to make part of the Pakistani-administered Himalayan region of Kashmir officially part his country. Imran Khan’s pledge to declare the area of Gilgit-Baltistan — which is part of the Pakistani-ruled Kashmir — the fifth province of Pakistan promptly angered neighbouring India, which itself last year revoked decades-old semi-autonomous status for the Indian-controlled sector of Kashmir. At the time, New Delhi divided the Muslim-majority region into two federally governed territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh — touching off anger on both sides of the frontier. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government also annulled the region’s separate constitution. Indians will now be all

Pompeo, Esper to push Trump’s anti-China message in India

WASHINGTON - Just a week before November’s election, two of President Donald Trump’s top national security aides will visit India for meetings focused largely on countering China’s growing global influence. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Mark Esper will meet their Indian counterparts for strategic and security talks on Tuesday, after which Pompeo will travel on to Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia. All of them are contending with a tug-of-war between Washington and Beijing that has intensified as Trump seeks to paint Biden as weak on China. Trump has played up his friendship with Indian Pr
