Taiwan raids Chinese firms to prevent poaching of chip engineers and tech talent

Taiwan conducted raids on Chinese semiconductor companiesfor illegal poaching chip engineers and other tech talent even as chip war between Taiwan and China worsened. The extensive raids were conducted in Taiwan’s capital Taipei and semiconductor hub, Hsinchu. The names of Chinese companies were not disclosed. This is the second time in three months when the Taiwan authorities raided Chinese companies. In March, Taiwan, home to chipmaker giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd , had raided eight Chinese companies for similar reasons in March. The development has yet again brought a focus on China’s alleged attempts to steal Taiwan’s technology and skills in chip making. Taiwanese authorities raided as many as ten Chinese companies or their R&D centers for

No invitation for Taiwan from World Health Assembly, expresses regret

Taipei City, Taiwan: The key gathering of World Health organisation (WHO) global health officials will take place from May 22-28, which will be the first in-person World Health Assembly (WHA) since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We find it deeply regrettable that the WHO has once again failed to remain professional and politically neutral to extend an invitation to Taiwan,” Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou said at a news briefing, as quoted by Taiwan Focus. The WHO has disregarded the widespread international support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHA as an observer, which is necessary and urgent, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, she added. This comes after the US government on Wednesday extended its support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHA. “We

Will China succeed in global image building

Beijing, China:When it comes to external invasion or humanitarian intervention to protect the citizens of any country in need, such as African countries with civil wars, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, the Chinese government, always plays the “state-sovereignty” card in any internal crisis of states, did not have that option in the Ukraine Crisis. This is evident in the contradictory statements used by the Chinese leadership over the Ukraine crisis in front of the international community. On one hand, China has avoided using the word “state sovereignty”, however, on another hand, at the early stages of the conflict China’s ambassador to Ukraine stated that China respected Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity, reported Modern Diplomacy, a European opinion-maker. With this, Chin

China should not consider Taiwan as its part: MP Michal Cooper

Taipei, Taiwan: Taiwan is not the part of china, said the Canadian parliamentarian Michael Cooper in the House of Commons in a clear discomfort to China. Cooper raised Taiwan mislabelling issue by Canadian Institutes of Health Research, reported Taiwan News. Cooper asked Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos on Friday during a House of Commons inquiry session why the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), responsible for funding health and medical research, mistakenly marked the nationality of Taiwanese grant applicants as “Taiwan, a province of China,” the Liberty Times reported.  “Taiwan is not a province of China, Taiwan is Taiwan!” he said. Cooper said he raised CIHR’s mislabelling issue six months ago and questioned why the error was not fixed after all thi

Vietnam: Only India can help us in sensitive areas

Kolkata: "Vietnam and India have chosen the 'middle way' of peace, stability and dialogue, the path of Buddha," said Ambassador of Vietnam to India Pham Sanh Chau. Notably, Vietnam and India were among the 35 nations that abstained from UN resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations. Chau stressed that Vietnam looks towards India for cooperation in areas like defence and peaceful use of nuclear technology. "Only India can help Vietnam in sensitive areas like defence and nuclear technology for peaceful use...they don't share such technologies," he said. Last month, India and Vietnam complimented each other on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and general s...

Coercion and Enticing offers from China to Latin American countries to dwarf Taiwan’s diplomatic existence

The Republic of China (Taiwan) has 14 tiny diplomatic allies, eight of them are in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is a territory that has emerged as a key battleground in the increasing geopolitical conflict between China and the United States. The issue of Taiwan's diplomatic existence as a state has become crucial to the China-US relationship, and Latin America will play an important role in this context. China has steadily advanced in the area in recent decades, becoming the leading commercial partner for the majority of Latin American countries. Simultaneously, China's investments and financial cooperation have expanded dramatically, albeit this trend has lately reversed. According to a Boston University research, the China Development Bank and China Eximbank would provide n...

Taiwan a safe haven for Hong Kong residents escaping from Chinese persecution

After the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, dissidents in mainland China used to escape to Hong Kong in boats. Many of them would finally reach safe havens in overseas countries. In those days, Hong Kong, still under British rule, was a refuge for democracy- and freed0m-loving people trying to escape the oppressive rule of the Communist Party of China. The story has moved ahead. After the withdrawal of the British from Hong Kong in 1997 the island territory has turned into a colony of China. Beijing has since clamped the draconian National Security Law in Hong Kong to throttle democracy and stamp out dissidence. Faced with persecution and prison terms, dissidents, members of the opposition and people fighting for their democratic rights are now escaping in boats to Taiwan in searc...

Bangladesh complaints about the poor quality of Chinese military supplies

Dhaka, Bangladesh:China exports 19 per cent of its total arms to Bangladesh and the COVID-19 surge has hit Chinese defense supplies to Bangladesh. Bangladesh Navy has reportedly complained to Chinese companies supplying spare parts for its corvettes, petrol crafts and inshore patrol vehicles about manufacturing defects and technical problems. These naval ships were purchased under the China-Bangladesh Defense Contract signed in 2011, reported Bangladesh Live News. M/s NORINCO, China, too apparently conveyed its inability to supply spare parts of main battle tanks that had been purchased from China in 2012 and 2013 ostensibly due to the COVID-19 situation. VIETNAM REJECTS CHINA’S FISHING RESTRICTION IN SOUTH CHINA SEA

The Vietnamese government has once again rejected China's seasonal fishing restriction in the South China Sea. The restriction, enforced unilaterally by Beijing each year, lasts from May to August and extends to all seas north of 12 degrees latitude, including the majority of the Gulf of Tonkin and the Paracel Islands, which are held by China but also claimed by Vietnam. The three-and-a-half-month embargo took effect on Sunday and applies to any seas in the South China Sea north of 12 degrees north latitude, which Vietnam and the Philippines also refer to as their "traditional fishing grounds."The fishing prohibition was condemned by Hanoi as a "violation of Vietnam's sovereignty and territorial authority."The ban covers a portion of the Gulf of Tonkin as well as the Paracel Islands, which...
