Culture Technique Department director Hab Touch said archeologists and architects from the ministry will visit Wat Phu Man Fah to inspect one of the chedis in the new Sihanakhom complex, the Khmer Times reported on Wednesday. “We are unsure of when we can go because of the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine situation, which makes things difficult,” Touch was quoted as saying. (Photo: Reuters) More than four years have passed since Myanmar security forces began "clearance operations" targeting ethnic Rohingya in Myanmar's northern Rakhine State. Purportedly a response to attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), an ethnic insurgent group, these operations were the culmination of mounting rights abuses and restrictions disproportionately directed at Rohingya communities. More than 40% of area villages were partially or completely destroyed, and Rohingya were displaced on a scale not seen since the 1970s. In the two weeks following the start of cl...

Myanmar military convoy hit by roadside bomb near Yangon: junta People attempt to extinguish a fire as houses burn in Namg Kar village in Magwe region's Gangaw township on Saturday, as fighting continues between the Myanmar military and protesters against the military coup. (AFP PHOTO / ANONYMOUS SOURCE) Myanmar anti-junta dissidents have carried out a bomb attack on security forces near Yangon, with several killed in an ensuing firefight, the military and media said. The neighbouring nation has been in turmoil since the military toppled Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government in February, sparking mass pro-democracy protests and a bloody crackdown by the military. Various townships across Myanmar have formed so-called "people defence forces" to fight back against the junta, although the...

Texas man gets execution delay over pastor’s touch request

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas death row inmate won a reprieve Wednesday evening from execution for killing a convenience store worker during a 2004 robbery that garnered $1.25 after claiming the state was violating his religious freedom by not letting his pastor lay hands on him at the time of his lethal injection. The U.S. Supreme Court blocked John Henry Ramirez’s execution about three hours after he could have been executed. He is condemned for fatally stabbing 46-year-old Pablo Castro, who worked at a Corpus Christi convenience store. Ramirez was in a small holding cell a few feet from the Texas death chamber at the Huntsville Unit prison when he was told of the reprieve by Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark. “He was quiet when I let him know,” Clark said.

Hopefully they go cold and we can stay hot.” Gray (6-6) struck out six while walking only two batters and didn’t give up his first hit until Avisail Garcia’s two-out single in the fourth. In the sixth, he loaded the bases with two outs but got Rowdy Tellez to ground

S’pore, US to launch climate partnership, collaborate on sustainable development and low-carbon solutions

SINGAPORE - Singapore and the United States will strengthen collaboration on climate action, environmental governance, sustainable development, and low-carbon solutions. ‘We left part of our soul there’: What soldiers turned political opponents agree on about Canada’s war in Afghanistan

OTTAWA — As defence minister in the Liberal government, Harjit Sajjan insists Canada is doing all it can do rescue Afghans who fear for their lives. Conservative MP Alex Ruff insists he’s failed at every turn. It would be easy to peg their respective positions as partisan, except that their feelings are not just political but also personal: both are military veterans of the war in Afghanistan. So although they see the current crisis in that country — and Canada’s ongoing response — from different perspectives, what they’re feeling comes from the same place: they’re hurting. Sajjan and Ruff are but two of the 40,000 soldiers who fought for Canada in Afghanistan, and have watched in horror — although not surprise — as the Taliban have retaken control of the country with breathless speed s

Broadcasters urged to cancel plans to cover Beijing Olympics

TOKYO (AP) — Some of the world’s largest broadcasters including American network NBC are being asked by human rights groups to cancel plans to cover next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Games are scheduled to open on Feb. 4. The request comes in an open letter from rights groups representing minorities in China, including Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kong residents and others. The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, was sent Tuesday to NBC Universal chief executive officer Jeff Shell and other international broadcast executives. NBC is paying $7.75 billion for the rights to the next six Olympics and works closely as a partner with the Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee. Those payments are estimated to account for up to 40% of the IOC’s total income. The let

The Saturday Debate: Does Canada need to buy new fighter jets?

Ottawa’s close ties to Washington often leads some to assume Canada does not need to spend on defence, instead relying on the U.S. to defend Canada’s territory. So do we need to buy new fighter jets? Richard Shimooka and Bianca Mugyenyi discuss in this week’s debate. Richard Shimooka Macdonald-Laurier Institute YES The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that government preparation is essential to successfully navigate unexpected crises. Yet, despite the experience of the 2003 SARS outbreak, successive governments failed have to maintain key capabilities and knowledge, leading to a lacklustre response in the early days of the pandemic. An obvious parallel exists with the recent debate over the need for a fighter aircraft in Canada. A standing military is tasked with safeguarding the country’s d
