Mindef, SUTD sign agreement to build defences against cyberattacks

SINGAPORE - With the growing threat of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) is seeking to tighten its defences by further training its experts and studying the methods employed by hackers. It is doing so through a partnership with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to strengthen collaboration in several areas, including research and technology, threat modelling and training, Mindef said on Thursday (Sept 16). A memorandum of understanding on operational technology security for critical infrastructure was signed by Defence Cyber Chief Brigadier-General (BG) Mark Tan and SUTD Associate Provost for Research and International Relations Yeo Kiat Seng. The signing took place at the university on the sidelines of a two-week cybersecuri...

Taiwan’s wax apples and sugar banned by China

Taipei: Taiwan’s sugar and wax apples banned by China recently are increasing the tension between the two governments. China announced that the products would be suspended from Monday, claiming quarantine pests were detected on multiple inspections, reports ABC News. The move follows a similar ban on pineapples earlier this year, prompting Taiwan to threaten to take mainland China to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the news channel reported. Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council told ABC News that the decision was made to protect agricultural production and ecological security. But Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council argues that "the ban is inconsistent with WTO and international trade regulations". Wu Muluan, a China scholar a

What ails the Chinese President?

China’s President Xi Jinping has not moved out of his country for the last 600 days now. Xi last went for a trip to Myanmar on January 18, 2020. This year he has attended more than a dozen meetings virtually. Recently, on September 09, 2021, he virtually attended a summit of leaders from BRICS nations. Besides, he has also had 60 telephonic calls with world leaders, including calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. As per Bloomberg’s report, Xi spoke with the US President Joe Biden by phone on September 10, 2021.  These events have led to speculation on Chinese President’s health condition which is probably not allowing him to travel abroad and attend face to face meetings. In the past as well, there have b

S’pore, US to launch climate partnership, collaborate on sustainable development and low-carbon solutions

SINGAPORE - Singapore and the United States will strengthen collaboration on climate action, environmental governance, sustainable development, and low-carbon solutions. This will create opportunities for businesses and workers in green growth sectors, including in energy transitions, clean energy infrastructure development, sustainable transport, sustainable finance, and quality carbon credits markets, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) on Monday (Aug 23). Announcing a new Singapore-US climate partnership during US Vice-President Kamala Harris’ visit to Singapore, MTI said climate change is a critical global challenge and a top priority for Singapore and the US. It added that both countries support global efforts to address this key challenge, and are fully committed to impl

The Saturday Debate: Does Canada need to buy new fighter jets?

Ottawa’s close ties to Washington often leads some to assume Canada does not need to spend on defence, instead relying on the U.S. to defend Canada’s territory. So do we need to buy new fighter jets? Richard Shimooka and Bianca Mugyenyi discuss in this week’s debate. Richard Shimooka Macdonald-Laurier Institute YES The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that government preparation is essential to successfully navigate unexpected crises. Yet, despite the experience of the 2003 SARS outbreak, successive governments failed have to maintain key capabilities and knowledge, leading to a lacklustre response in the early days of the pandemic. An obvious parallel exists with the recent debate over the need for a fighter aircraft in Canada. A standing military is tasked with safeguarding the country’s d

Harris says she urged Vietnam to free political dissidents

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said Thursday she raised issues of human rights abuses and restrictions on political activism in her conversations with Vietnamese leaders this week, but offered no indication those talks bore fruit. “We’re not going to shy away from difficult conversations. Difficult conversations often must be had with the people that you otherwise may have a partnership with,” she said at a news conference in Hanoi on Thursday. Harris said she spoke with Vietnamese leaders in particular about the release of political dissidents, but did not describe the outcome of those conversations. Vietnam has faced criticism for restrictions on freedom of expression and on the press and a crackdown on people it deems political dissidents. But Harris didn’t re

Businesses say Hong Kong quarantine threatens financial hub status

Businesses say Hong Kong quarantine threatens financial hub status While infection rates have been kept in check, there is a fear that Hong Kong could be left behind the rest of the world as vaccines are rolled out and economies reopen. HONG KONG: European business leaders have warned that Hong Kong's stringent quarantine measures have left its residents "indefinitely trapped" in the city, threatening its status as an international business centre. In a rare open letter to chief executive Carrie Lam on Thursday, the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong said the city's most recent hardening of measures for inbound travellers were "out of proportion" and a "significant setback". The Chinese financial hub maintains some of the strictest quarantine rules in the world, an approach that...

Fixing the US-China tech split

Fixing the US-China tech split Heightened US-China tensions have raised the prospect of a deep global technology divide, potentially forcing other countries to choose which camp to join. There are plenty of grim scenarios involving irreconcilable splits between core technologies that power a wide range of products and services, from aircraft and automobiles to precision engineering for robotics and payment systems for e-commerce. Should these scenarios materialise, the world's two largest economies will pour huge amounts of resources into a zero-sum race to control technology's cutting edge. Both the United States and China understand the central role of technology in driving their economies and global development. They also know that mastering it, as well as safeguarding relevant intell...
