Fears for supplies in Myanmar as exodus grows from fighting This handout from Kachinwaves taken and released on May 16, 2021 shows protesters taking part in a demonstration in Hpakant in support of Mindat, a town in Chin state where a civilian defence force has clashed with the military, as the country remains in turmoil after the February coup. (AFP PHOTO / KACHINWAVES) People displaced by an upsurge of fighting in Myanmar's Chin State voiced concerns over shelter and supplies as more flee the conflict that has sprung up between the army and insurgents opposed to the junta that seized power in February. The exodus also threatens to push more people over the nearby border with India, where an Indian government official said more than 15,000 had sought refuge since the Feb 1 coup that ha...

EU vows to boost efforts to end Israeli-Palestinian fighting

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union will redouble its efforts to end the surge in violence between the Israeli military and Palestinian militants, and seek progress during a special meeting of its foreign ministers on Tuesday. The EU also called the weekend destruction of a building housing The Associated Press and other major international media “extremely worrying” and said safe working conditions for journalists were essential. The EU has never had the impact that Washington can wield in the region and no immediate breakthrough was expected from Tuesday’s meeting. Ever since the outbreak of violence last week, the EU has been calling for restraint and condemned attacks that hit civilian populations. Individual member states also let their voices be heard. France’s President Emmanuel

2 kindergartens at Grace Assembly of God to remain open, church premises to be cleaned and disinfected

SINGAPORE - The two Grace House kindergartens at the Grace Assembly of God church premises will continue to remain open, as the pastor from the church who tested positive for Covid-19 had no contact with the schools. Arrangements have been made to clean and disinfect all the church premises as a precautionary measure, including the kindergartens, though a church spokesman could not confirm when this will be carried out. This comes after a pastor at the church tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday (May 26). Grace House, which is at both church premises in Tanglin and Bukit Batok, has a third school in Thomson. The kindergartens are not operated by the church. The church spokesman confirmed with The Straits Times that all its pastors operate from both premises as needed. She said th...

Regional vaccine approach is imperative

Regional vaccine approach is imperative A shipment of 600,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines donated by China arrives at Phnom Penh International Airport in February. (Photo: Reuters) As vaccine diplomacy thrives and vaccine nationalism rears its head, it has become clear that the ideal global solution to the collective action problem of the coronavirus pandemic is for all countries to put their eggs in the same basket. If all countries are forced to rely on the global vaccine alliances' and the World Health Organization's Covid-19 Global Vaccines Access (Covax) plan, whereby any vaccine for one means an available antidote for all, the post-pandemic recovery would arrive faster and smoother with more promising prospects. But short of the ideal solution, the global health system is largely ba...

EXPORTS REMAIN RESILIENT IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC

EXPORTS REMAIN RESILIENT IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC Thailand’s food exporters have found opportunities in the midst of the current crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. As consumers worldwide visit supermarkets and dine in restaurants less often, they are buying more processed and canned foods to cook at home as well as more ready-to-eat foods. Thailand recorded a healthy growth in the export of processed foods such as fruits and vegetables and canned seafood, which is in part attributed to economic recovery in those buying countries. The trend has highlighted the strength and diversity of Thailand’s food supply chain, which is serving the country’s goal of producing foods to cater to the growing demand among global consumers for nutritious and functional foods that serve their s

Australia resumes WCup qualifying with 3-0 win over Kuwait

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of - The Socceroos previewed their first match in 567 days with a simple message: We’re back. It took just 55 seconds for the Australians to start proving it. After the coronavirus pandemic forced a 19-month delay in their World Cup Asian qualifying campaign, it took less than a minute for Mathew Leckie to head in the opening goal of a 3-0 win over Kuwait on a sweltering Thursday night in Kuwait City. Jackson Irvine extended Australia’s lead midway through the first half, firing home the rebound after Martin Boyle’s penalty miss. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Adjin Hrustic netted the third with a free kick in the 66th minute as Australia sealed a fifth win in five games. Australia coach Graham Arnold assembled a squad of players from more than a dozen leagues around the

Global stocks mixed after Wall St ends May with gain

BEIJING (AP) — Global stock markets were mixed Monday after Wall Street ended May with a gain and Japan’s factory output grew less than expected. London opened higher while Frankfurt retreated. Tokyo declined while Shanghai and Hong Kong gained. Wall Street futures were higher. U.S. markets were closed for a holiday. Investors are wavering between optimism about consumer spending and factory output reviving and unease that rising inflation might prompt governments and central banks to withdraw stimulus. “It still feels like a market looking for direction in the face of uncertainty,” said Patrik Schowitz of JP Morgan Asset Management in a report. In early trading, London’s FTSE 100 was down less than 0.1% at 7,022.61. The DAX in Frankfurt fell 0.2% to 15,485.89 while the CAC 40 in Pari

Emerging from a year of illness and isolation

In An Uncertain Situation. (Photos: Kalwit Studio & Gallery) In a quiet and gloomy world, a girl walks alone on empty and winding roads. The girl is a character in the paintings Alone1 and Alone2 from the Covid-19 pandemic-inspired collection "Linetopia" by Apiwat Bunler. Periods of stay-at-home and self-isolation had a strong impact on independent artist Apiwat, who also bartends in his own bar, Barley, where he meets many people. "The atmosphere during the pandemic is depressing. I feel lonely staying home by myself. The girl in Alone1 and Alone2 represents a lonesome state of mind with dark colours. The painting In An Uncertain Situation portrays my own character dragged by a chariot, which was inspired by a scene in the movie Troy, when Achilles tied and dragged Hector's corpse with ...

China’s ambition now includes influence beyond immediate neighbourhood

Beijing, China: A Chinese navy unit has recently its training exercise in Pacific Ocean. This is giving birth to speculation that China is now aiming to expand its border ambition focus away from its immediate neighbourhood.According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the Southern Theatre Command of the PLA said on Saturday that a fleet under its command had travelled over 6,700 nautical miles over the past month, passing between Indonesia and the Philippines and through the western Pacific."The complicated military situation presents a great challenge to the will and perseverance of the officers and soldiers… The use of weapons in the far seas not only helps assess equipment performance under continuous sailing conditions, it also tests the ability of officers and soldiers to command an

Thai agencies close in on RCEP approval

A file photo shows economic leaders on screen during the 4th RCEP Summit, part of the 37th Asean Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam in November of last year. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade pact, the world's biggest free trade deal, is making good progress with Singapore and China already submitting their ratifications. According to Auramon Supthaweethum, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, other members are accelerating their internal processes, while three Thai state agencies are revving up issuance of related regulations for submission to the Asean Secretariat by October. The agreement was signed by 15 nations in Asia-Pacific including Thailand last November. It requires ratification from at least nine countries (at least six from Asean and three...
