What ails the Chinese President?

China’s President Xi Jinping has not moved out of his country for the last 600 days now. Xi last went for a trip to Myanmar on January 18, 2020. This year he has attended more than a dozen meetings virtually. Recently, on September 09, 2021, he virtually attended a summit of leaders from BRICS nations. Besides, he has also had 60 telephonic calls with world leaders, including calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron. As per Bloomberg’s report, Xi spoke with the US President Joe Biden by phone on September 10, 2021.  These events have led to speculation on Chinese President’s health condition which is probably not allowing him to travel abroad and attend face to face meetings. In the past as well, there have b

China bought YouTubers worldwide to praise itself in international front

New Delhi: China has hired foreign youtubers to praise the policies of China and change the mindset of people towards China. They use the content which says good things about the country and criticises the critics of the same. YouTubers deny that they are paid and sponsored by the Chinese government. When asked about why they continue to defend China, most of the content creators state that they are on a self-appointed mission to debunk the ‘lies’ of the West and if Chinese media shares their content ‘there is no harm in it.’ But the connection between these so-called independent YouTubers with Chinese State media does not end at the state media just sharing their content, by their own admission these YouTubers have even collaborated with Chinese state media on multiple videos. “One

IDEOLOGICAL LOGIC BEHIND CHINA CRACKDOWN ON PRIVATE TUTORINGChina faces a tumult of confusion and frustration from millions of angry parents following thecrackdown of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on private schools and private tutoring. The idea is ostensibly to reduce a part of the tremendous pressure Chinese children face as theyprepare for an extremely competitive school and high school life. However, some analysts see an attempt to strengthen public school education in order to keepthe private sector in check, increase control of the state over school education with a view toinculcate educational values the state deems fit, and reduce foreign influences, whatever theymay be, on children. There is a bizarre explanation doing the rounds on the internet that the government may havecome...

Chicken Blood Therapy: A Panacea for Children in China

In recent years, the term “chicken baby” has become popular in China. Crazy parents, who obsessively want their children to become a super kid and ‘succeed’ in every field, push their kids to get ‘chicken blood injection’ as it enhances hyperactivity among them. The demand of ‘chicken blood treatment,’ is on rise in China which used to be a fad during the Cultural Revolution in 1960s. People would wait in line, bring their roosters, to receive fresh chicken blood, which they considered to be the ‘cure-all’ for many health problems, like baldness, infertility, cancer, etc. Media reports suggest that as a result of this, while some hire exclusive tutors and best sports coaches, others go to the extent of buying houses next to the best public schools in the city these days. Of the man

Businesses say Hong Kong quarantine threatens financial hub status

Businesses say Hong Kong quarantine threatens financial hub status While infection rates have been kept in check, there is a fear that Hong Kong could be left behind the rest of the world as vaccines are rolled out and economies reopen. HONG KONG: European business leaders have warned that Hong Kong's stringent quarantine measures have left its residents "indefinitely trapped" in the city, threatening its status as an international business centre. In a rare open letter to chief executive Carrie Lam on Thursday, the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong said the city's most recent hardening of measures for inbound travellers were "out of proportion" and a "significant setback". The Chinese financial hub maintains some of the strictest quarantine rules in the world, an approach that...

General Motors stock slides after extending Michigan, Ohio plant closures

General Motors (GM) shares slumped lower Thursday after the carmaker extended the shutdown times of several North American plans amid the ongoing shortage in global semiconductor supplies and the recall of its Chevy Bolt battery. General Motors said plants in Orion, Michigan would add an additional two weeks of downtime owing to a ‘batter pack shortage” linked to the recall. Plants in Lansing, Michigan, and Wentzville, Ohio will also add an another week of downtime, as will the carmaker’s assembly facility in Ramos, Mexico. GM said the recall, which now covers 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 models of the Chevy Bolt, was expanded to address two manufacturing defects — a torn anode tab and folded separator — in the car’s battery cell that could increase the risk of fire. The expanded recall wil

Some protesters hold flares in Ratchaprasong, one of the starting points for several "car mob" rallies in Bangkok on Sunday. (Photo: Apichart Jinakul) Thousands of anti-government protesters in Bangkok and other provinces blared their car and motorcycle horns on Sunday in a deafening call for the ouster of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The honking began at 6pm during the playing of the national anthem, the climax of a day of predominantly peaceful "car mob" rallies in Bangkok and other provinces. The rallies were organised by red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikuar and activist Somsak Boonngam-anong. Other groups, including Tha Lu Fah, also took part in the parades. They demanded the prime minister resign over the government's inept handling of the Covid-19 crisis, with new cases and dea...
