11,140 new Covid cases, 116 deaths

There were 11,140 new Covid-19 cases and 116 more fatalities recorded during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Friday morning.

There were 11,068 cases in the general population and 72 among prison inmates.

On Thursday, 9,933 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

This compared with 11,200 new cases and 113 fatalities reported on Thursday morning, and 9,866 cases and 102 deaths announced on Wednesday.

Since April 1, when the third wave of Covid-19 began, Thailand has treated 1,660,574 Covid-19 patients, 1,534,364 of whom have recovered to date.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 1,689,437 Covid-19 cases, with 1,561,790 complete recoveries so far.

The death toll stood at 17,440 during the third wave and 17,534 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom’s 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 18. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Friday afternoon that Bangkok again had the most new infections, with 1,255 cases, while four southernmost border provinces had a combined 1,212 cases, led by Yala with 776.

Dr Chawetsan Namwat, director of the emergency health hazards and diseases office, said during the CCSA briefing that the surge of cases in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla continued to be a major concern.

Gen Supot Malaniyom, who is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the CCSA, said earlier on Friday that the Covid-19 task force was contemplating more lockdown measures in the four southernmost provinces to contain the sprad of the virus.

The plan would be tabled for a CCSA meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to decide on Thursday, said Gen Supot, who is also the National Security Council secretary-general.

The CCSA said there were 16 new imported cases from eight countries, lead by four from Cambodia and three from Myanmar. Bangkok had the most new deaths, with 28, followed by eight in Samut Prakan.

Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla reported a combined Covid-related fatalities. Globally, Covid-19 cases rose by 461,091 in 24 hours to 237,545,619.

The worldwide death toll went up by 7,902 to 4,849,332. The United States had the most cases at 45,021,267, up 102,090 and the most deaths at 730,206, up 709.
